How to distinguish TPE composite fabric from TPU film fabric

Date:May 29, 2019

There are many types of film fabrics. Although many films look very familiar, their performances are different. Let's take a look at the film of TPE composite fabric and TPU film fabric.

How to distinguish TPE composite fabric from TPU film fabric.

Both TPE and TPU are thermoplastic rubber-elastic materials. TPE and TPU materials with similar hardness, especially black, have certain softness and rubber elasticity. For example, it is difficult to distinguish whether it is TPE or TPU. of. But starting from the details, we can analyze the differences and differences between TPE and TPU from many aspects.

1. Difference in hardness (range)

The SEBS modified TPE has a wide range of adjustable hardness, and its hardness range can be varied from ShoreA Scale 0~100, while the TPU hardness range is usually in Shore60A~Shore70D (currently there are soft TPUs with hardness around 45A abroad. But the price is quite expensive). Therefore, it can be said that the hardness range of the TPE is medium-low hardness, and the TPU hardness is medium-high hardness.

2. Burning distinction

TPE burns with a slight aroma, and the burning smoke is less and lighter. TPU burns with a certain pungent odor, and there is a slight explosion of Ziz in the burning.

3. Performance differences

TPU's elastic and elastic recovery properties (flexible creep resistance) are superior to TPE. The material structure of TPU is mainly polymer homogeneous structure, which belongs to polymer resin. TPE is a multi-phase structured aggregated alloy material. High-hardness TPE processing is prone to product deformation, and TPU exhibits excellent elasticity in all hardness intervals, and the product is not easily deformed.

4. Difference in touch

Some overmolded products, such as handles and wheels, may be TPE or TPU. TPU material has a rough feel and strong frictional resistance; while TPE material has a delicate and soft feel and weak friction.

In summary, both TPE and TPU are soft materials and have good rubber elasticity. In comparison, TPE is superior in terms of tactile comfort, while TPU is more elastic and strong. For products with lower hardness (such as below 30A), TPE should be used, which can play the role of anti-skid cushioning and shock absorption. For products with higher hardness (80A or more) that require good elasticity, TPU can be used.
